Washington Triumphs Over Hessian Forces at Trenton

Finally! The momentum has shifted to the patriotic cause with the victory at Trenton, New Jersey. As all of us know General Washington, and the rest of us rebels, desperately needed a victory. Many of our less patriotic soldiers were deserting and many were leaving this coming January 1st, when their enlistments finished. With this being the first real victory since our herioc acts at Lexington and Concord, it seems more likely that those men and more will enlist in our patriotic cause.

Christmas night, while most of us were sleeping cozy and warm in your beds, Washington and his men were risking their lives marching to a great victory. General George Washington had thought of a great plan to surprise the Hessian occupied city of Trenton. He planned to capture as much of General John Rall's Hessian troops as possible. Everyone can agree, he did a fine job. The actual surprise attack happened on the day after Christmas.

Washington's surprise attack was a very complex and involved plan. He made sure to cover the whole base with his army for the best results. They divided into four parts each covered by a different General. They were General Glover, General Green, General Sullivan, and General Washington. The Hessians were drunk and hungover from their heavily celebrated Christmas. They hadn't fortified the town because of the detailed lies Washington's spy, John Honeyman, told General Rall. He told him that we would not attack and we didn't have the heart for battle anymore. Our ignorant enemy believed him. There was no patrol because of the horrible storm that was sweaping through New Jersey. Washington could not have picked a better place or time to attack. Once the battle started it was obvious that the patriots would emerge victorious because early in the battle General John Rall was shot leaving the Hessians without a leader. It only was a few short hours before Washington was crossing back over the Delaware with tons of supplies and captured Hessians.

Most people would think this attack was just an aimless last chance effort. He had to prove to a select few that it could actually work. He knew America needed a victory and fast. Otherwise, the British would be back dictating the land and people again. He attacked in a daring act by crossing the icy Delaware River and attacking a more supplied enemy. The timing and position of the battle influenced the outcome greatly. With this victory the patriots gained much needed cannons, horses, and other supplies that were then shipped to Pennsylvania.

Hopefully, this outstanding victory is a turning point in the war for America. Maybe this is a good sign for the fight for freedom. General Washington and his troops deserve great applause for the courage and bravery they showed. This should send a message to England and its King that we will not quit until we achieve our freedom.
